☼p 30 april bracht de maatschappelijk bewogen Italiaanse topkunstenaar Michelangelo Pistoletto een bezoek aan Doel en zag hij de kunstwerken die gemaakt werden in het kader van de KunstDoel-Inside/Outside projecten. Pistoletto was zo onder de indruk van de schoonheid van het dorp en de solidariteit die deze projecten in de kunstensector hadden losgeweekt, dat hij zich ter plaatse voornam de nieuwe Vlaamse regering bij haar aantreden een brief te schrijven over het lot van Doel. Pistoletto voegde deze week de daad bij het woord en stuurde een pakkende brief naar de Vlaamse regering.

Hooggeachte Minister President van de Vlaamse Regering,

Beste Meneer Peeters,

Donderdag 30 april bracht ik een bezoek aan het dorp Doel op uitnodiging van KunstDoel vzw, een partnerorganisatie van Cittadellarte's Love Difference beweging.

Minister President, ik was diep getroffen door de esthetische kracht van deze plek. Toen ik vanaf de Scheldeoever het omliggende landschap aanschouwde, was het alsof ik op een metafysische as stond waar verschillende tijdsgewrichten elkaar kruisen: Voor mij zag ik het rustige dorp met het pittoreske haventje; achter mij de rivier en de druisende Antwerpse haven; rechts van mij het oude windmolentje in de schaduw van de twee machtige torens van de kerncentrale; en links van mij de reusachtige kranen van het Deurganckdok.

Minister President, ik heb al vele plaatsen bezocht over heel de wereld, maar dit is werkelijk een unieke plek. Mijn gastvrouwen van KunstDoel vertelden me dat de bestaande plannen voor de bouw van een tweede containerdok misschien niet in de nabije toekomst zullen gerealiseerd worden wegens de gewijzigde economische context. Als dit inderdaad het geval is, roep ik u dringend op deze plek te bewaren voor latere generaties, als een authentiek stukje erfgoed dat heden en verleden, natuur en cultuur, landbouw en industrie, water en land met elkaar verbindt.

Deze eeuwenoude plek is van een onschatbare waarde en ik ben ervan overtuigd dat het een prestigieuze artistieke en toeristische trekpleister met internationale uitstraling zou kunnen worden. Daarnaast zou het een aangenaam en rustig oord kunnen zijn voor zakenlui en havenmensen om even te verpozen en ontspannen…

Wegens de nabijheid van de stad Antwerpen en de bereikbaarheid via de rivier is het tevens een uitgelezen en gemakkelijk toegankelijke bestemming voor dagjestoeristen, eventueel in combinatie met het rustieke dorpje Lillo op rechteroever en het Liefkenshoekfort voorbij het Deurganckdok.

Mits een relatief kleine investering zou het dorp een ideale en hoogst originele locatie kunnen zijn voor fabuleuze openluchtvoorstellingen en internationale kunsttentoonstellingen, die werk zouden kunnen verschaffen aan de resterende dorpsbewoners en aan mensen uit omliggende gemeentes. Doel een nieuwe, culturele bestemming schenken binnen de reusachtige haven zou ook goodwill creëren onder de bevolking ten aanzien van het Antwerps Havenbestuur. Het zou een voorbeeld kunnen zijn van een succesvolle en vernieuwende verzoening van industriële, sociale, culturele en politieke belangen, een voorafspiegeling van een nieuwe en warmere samenleving…

Hooggeachte Minister President, het Doeldossier biedt een ongekende kans om nieuwe economische waarden een praktische invulling te geven -- warme en verzoeningsgerichte waarden waarnaar de bevolking in deze barre economische tijden zozeer verlangt. Ik ben zeker dat de socio-culturele sector u enorm dankbaar zou wezen als deze plek een nieuwe en inspirerende toekomst zou gegund worden…

In het volste vertrouwen dat uw Regering de best mogelijke oplossing zal uitwerken voor het dorp Doel, verblijf ik,

☼n 30 April, world-famous Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto paid a visit to Doel and saw the works of art made within the framework of the KunstDoel-Inside/Outside projects. Pistoletto was so impressed by the beauty of the village and the wave of solidarity it had generated within the art sector, that he decided to write a letter regarding the fate of Doel to the new Flemish Government. This week, he lived up to his words and wrote a heartfelt plea for the preservation of Doel to Flemish Minister President Peeters. The picture shows the moment on the river bank -- "standing on a metaphysical axis where different time ages intersect" -- described in Pistoletto's letter.

Right Honourable Minister President of the Flemish Government,
Dear Mister Peeters,

On Thurday, 30 April I paid a visit to the village of Doel at the invitation of KunstDoel vzw, an organization that is twinned to Cittadellarte's Love Difference movement.

Minister President, I was deeply struck by the esthetical power of this place. Watching over the surrounding landscape from the riverbank, I felt as if I was standing on a metaphysical axis where different time ages intersect: Right before me, the quiet village with the picturesque dock; behind me the river and the bustling port of Antwerp; to the right, the ancient windmill overshadowed by the two colossal cooling towers of the nuclear power plant; and to the right the gigantic cranes of the Deurganck Dock.

Minister President, I have visited many places throughout the world, but this spot is really unique. My KunstDoel hosts told me that existing plans for a second container terminal may not materialize in the near future due to the changed economic context. If this is indeed true, I would urgently appeal on you to conserve this place for future generations to enjoy, as an authentic remnant that links the present and the past, nature and culture, agriculture and industry, water and land…

The value of this immemorial place is immeasurable and I am sure it could become a prestigious artistic and tourist venue with international fame, and also a pleasant, tranquil place for businessmen and port people to stay and relax…

Its closeness to the city of Antwerp and accessibility via the river would make it a perfect and easily reachable destination for day trippers, possibly in combination with the rustic village of Lillo at the right bank and the Liefkenshoek Citadel located beyond the Deurganckdock.

With some relatively small investments, the village could become an ideal and highly original venue to stage fabulous open-air productions and international art exhibits, which would generate employment opportunities for remaining locals and people from surrounding villages. Granting Doel a new, cultural destiny within a huge port would also generate much goodwill among the people toward the Antwerp Port Authority. It could become an example of a successful and novel reconciliation of industrial, social, cultural and political interests, a prefiguration of a new and warmer society….

Right Honourable Minister President, the case of Doel offers an unprecedented opportunity to implement new economic values - warm and reconciliatory values that the people are longing for in these harsh economic times. I am sure the entire socio-cultural community would be enormously grateful if this place were granted a new and inspiring future…

INTERNATIONAL EXPLANATION ON THE ANTISTRESSPROJECT WILL FOLLOW SOON. LAUNCHDATE: 21.12.2012.

Beste Medemensen,

We zijn vereerd U uit te nodigen voor de MANIK 8 happening op 21 december.
In bijlage, vind U een flyer met een indrukwekkende lijst deelnemende kunstenaars.

Zondag 21 december 2008, zal een fijne namiddag en avond worden, vol verrassende kunst, optredens, poëzie, theater, beeld en muziek. Het is het officiële begin van onze nieuwste boreling in de schoot van het vzw-landschap: We houden vzw 't Antistressproject boven de doopfont. Een vzw die mensen erop wil wijzen dat we allemaal een welvaartsbewustzijn zijn, en dit middels kunst en ontspanning....

De tentoonstelling zelf loopt van 21 december 2008 t.e.m. 11 januari 2009. Het is een dubbeltentoonstelling:

Café de Jezuiet (aan de Academie) is open elke weekdag vanaf 10 uur tot 02 uur minimum. Zaterdag en zondag is de Jezuiet open voor kijk- en dorstlustigen vanaf 20 uur.
't Antistressproject vzw, gelegen te Huikstraat 48, 2000 Antwerpen, zal open zijn elke woensdagavond van 19 tot 21 uur; Alsook op de finissage van 11.01.2009, van 17 tot 21 uur.

2de NACHT VAN DE POWEZIE

Beste Lieve Mensen,

Ons programma is opgesteld. In de bijlage vind je alle info over tijden en programma van de tweede Nacht van de Powezie.

We starten om 20u aan een 'reeks' van meer dan 50 excellente dichters. Kijk hem in en je zal versteld staan: Sterren (sl)alom...

Het unieke adres is: TNIEF BADHUIS, Burchtgracht 14, (hoek Zakstraat) 2000 Antwerpen Dit is gelegen nabij het Steen en beneden het Vleeshuis. Maar pijltjes zullen er vanaf de kathedraal ook zijn. Kijk uit je doppen dus!

Vanaf het centraal station, kan je er gemakkelijk geraken per tram: 2, 3, 5, 10, 11, 15... Uitstappen nabij Groenplaats. Dan richting kathedraal stappen en pijltjes volgen. Vanaf het Steen zullen er ook pijltjes zijn. Bij het Steen stopt ook bus 6 / 34.

Meer info, of nog een wijziging te melden? Iemand vergeten? Schrijf me.

Dear and Loving People,

I am proud to present to you the program for the Night of Powetry 2006. In the attached excell-document you will find more than 50 of the finest poets taking the stage on saturday 11.11.2006.

We kick off at eight. The one and only address is: THE BATH HOUSE, Burchtgracht 14, 2000 Antwerpen. This is very close to the area of the cathedral and town hall. Also very close to the 'Steen', near the Schelde-river.

There will be clear indications. Lots of good vibrations. From central station trams 2, 3, 15, 10 and eleven can bring you close. Ask for the cathedral or the 'Steen'. Walk to the cathedral and the Steen. Look out for our arrows... Bring your love...

Spread the word as much as you can. So, people will know you will be there.

One more important thing: We shall ask 5 instead of 3 euro's. So we are shure to cover all expenses. For those who truly have no cash, there is the option to help a little for the happening... Money shouldn't be an issue. If it is, tell us and we will find a way to get you in. Everybody is welcome!

Beste Medemensen,

U bent welkom op de Nacht van de Powezie 2006. Welkom om te komen kijken. Welkom om te komen voordragen. Welkom om een handje toe te steken. Welkom om mee te komen genieten. Welkom om een fijne avond en nacht met vrienden en bezielde dichters te delen.

De Nacht zal plaatsvinden 11.11.2006. ~~Net als in 2004 zal deze doorgaan in de voormalige Gouverneurswoning te Antwerpen, nabij het park van de Harmonie~~. Deuren gaan open om 20u. We trachten zo diep mogelijk de nacht in te gaan. Vorige editie sloten wij om 5 uur 's ochtends de deuren na een laatste 'beminnelijk' rondje poëzie.

In het Nederlands taalgebied is dit een vrijwel uniek evenement. Ik ben als drijvende kracht achter dit gebeuren, bijzonder fier en verheugd deze tweede editie te mogen aankondigen. Ik besef bijzonder goed dat trachten een evenement te herhalen niet evident is. Elke Nacht zal anders zijn...

De eerste Nacht van de Powezie werd gedragen door tientallen vrijwilligers en mensen van goede wil. Ook op deze tweede editie zal het ganse evenement gedragen worden door elke vrijwilige bijdrage: Niet alleen bezielde dichters, maar ook de mensen achter de bar of de mensen die met bezems de laatste restanten keren op het einde van de Nacht... Dank U!

Ik kan niet genoeg het unieke karakter benadrukken van de Nacht van de Powezie:

Stichting Pipelines vzw is een duidelijk sociaal getinte organisatie. 3 euro inkom is bijzonder toegankelijk en laagdrempellig. We pogen een evenement in het leven te roepen waar iedereen zich welkom kan voelen. Een evenement dat bovendien niet verneukt wordt door overcommercialisering. Een omgeving die ruimte laat voor experiment.

Elke helpende hand zorgt voor meerwaarde.

Een aantal bekende dichters uit binnen- en buitenland komen. Zij ondersteunen de minder gekende dichters. En deze dichters doen dat aan voorwaarden die elders ongekend zijn. Juist, omdat zij mee het sociale karakter van de Nacht van de Powezie inzien en mede koesteren (willen).

Eveneens, onderkennen zij ook het verschil met andere poëziefestivals. Wij trachten bijzonder selectief te zijn wat betreft het toelaten van reclame. Adverteren is op zich geen schande. Maar wat verzet bieden ten opzichte van een cultuur van redundante reclame is fundamenteel waardevol.

Het feit dat wij terug in een kraakpand terechtkomen is ook betekenisvol. Dit houdt organisatorisch risico's in. Maar zonder durf zou een evenement als dit simpelweg niet van grond geraken. Enerzijds, kaarten we hiermee de problematiek van leegstand verder aan. Anderzijds, tonen we hiermee ook dat er nood is aan vrijplaatsen waar experimenteren kan.

Wij hopen verder te kunnen doorgroeien tot een jaarlijks evenement. Stad Antwerpen ondersteunt ons dit jaar met een subsidie van 2000 euro. Dit stelt ons in staat een aantal buitenlandse dichters tot hier te krijgen. Daarnaast, helpt het ons de ruimte wat beter in te kleden, een ietwat meer degelijke affiesj te verspreiden (per 1 november), voldoende drank en eten voor medewerkers te voorzien, alsook meerdere podia.

Er zal één geprogrammeerd hoofdpodium zijn, één vrij podium en een aantal kleinere poëzieruimtes. Indien je op het hoofdpodium wil, is het kwestie van snel te reageren. Geef duidelijk aan wanneer je optreden wil! En dan houden wij daar in de mate van het mogelijke rekening mee. Heb je experimentele ideeën? Stel dan gerust iets voor. Plek zat. Geef ook duidelijk je technische vereisten aan ons door!

Er kan veel. We hebben de middelen voor projectieschermen en diverse geluidsinstallaties. Klassiek kan. Crossover kan. Multimedia kan. En als het even technisch wil meezitten zal er ook een internetverbinding tot stand gebracht worden. Dit opent de deur voor dichters uit gans de wereld...

De gouverneurswoning is omringd door een grote tuin. Gras groen bomen. Iets buiten doen kan, indien het niet al te laat is en je rekening houdt met de buren. Er komt hoogstwaarschijnlijk ook al één vuurspuwende dichter... Waarover later meer. We geven de lijst namen vrij op 1 november. We willen graag enthousiaste mensen aantrekken. Liever dan mensen die enkel en alleen komen voor grote namen en hielen likken.

Doorgroeien zal een organisatie vereisen die meer door het jaar heen doorwerkt. En vermoedelijk ook eens aanvragen beginnen indienen voor subsidies bij de diverse overheden en culturele instanties... Mensen die hier zin en talent voor hebben, mogen zich ook steeds 'aanmelden'.

De eerste Nacht van de Powezie was een hartsverwarmend succes. We hopen dat met deze tweede Nacht alle aanwezigen met een zelfde gevoel naar huis weer zullen keren. important update !!!

Loving People,

I have an important change in plans to report!! We have had to change our location last minute. Tough decision. Especially when you know we already had a long way getting this far...

Anyway, we have had troubles with the squatters of the Gouverner's house. One of them assaulted a friend musician. And there have been some other incidents. Though we are patient, we cannot take a risc in terms of violence. Stichting Pipelines Vzw is a peaceful organisation!

So, we had to make a move. We decided to go to a squat center of town, officially recognized. In that sense, it is a more comfortable environment. The building itself though is not as big as the Gouvernor's house. This gives an extra challenge... Maybe let performers/poets do a double performance... swithching from one room to another.

Maximum capacity of one room is about 75 to a 100 people... Quite a difference... The city has allowed us to set up a tent or so in front of the building. This opens other possibilities... We'll manage somehow. We are happy to do something and do it in a socially active environment. The people involved with this squat have done a lot for homeless people and more.

This squat has a name in Dutch 'Badhuis'. Well, it's not a bad house. Rather a good house. Bad translated in English should be bath. A house where you can take a bath. That was it's former use. Still have to figure out a careful translation... Guess we don't want to shock the nominalists amongst us... ;-)

Lieve Beste Mensen,

Onze hoofdkantoren draaien op oververhitte toeren... maar blijven evenwel bijzonder functioneel. Bij deze reeds een ongelooflijk dikke mersi voor al Uw bijdrage voor ons komende krantkunsttijdschrift Timewave Zero!!!

Iets gans anders echter. We zijn onze geplande locatie kwijt. Eén van de bewoners van kraakpand het Gouverneurshuis heeft een bevriendde muzikant belaagd en behoorlijk bezeerd. Nog enkele minder prettige verhalen zijn ons ter ore gekomen. Niet leuk.

Andere locatie zoeken dus... en gevonden. Een kraakpand genaamd het Badhuis zal de plek zijn waar wij onze kunsten kunnen en mogen tonen. Het is het Badhuis aan het Steen, centrum Antwerpen... Redelijk dichtbij de kathedraal. Een erkend kraakpand, waarvan de bewoners zich al meerdere jaren ingezet hebben voor daklozen. Bvb. onder de vorm van volxkeukens en diverse laagdrempelige culturele activiteiten.

De ruimtes zijn er evenwel kleiner. Met telkens een capaciteit van 75 à 100 mensen. Niet zo riant als het Gouverneurshuis. Maar wel pittig. En bijvoorbeeld voorzien van een volledig ingerichtte professionele keuken. Handig! We krijgen ook de kans van de stad Antwerpen een buitenpodium te creëren... voor de deur. Met wat fantasie, handigheid en wilskracht maken we er hier ook iets leuks en gezellig van!

Vorige keer was bijzonder leuk: Wat lekkere biosoep, een aantal krachtige voordrachten en muziek. Werktitel voor deze happening is: 'Lang leve de zomer!'

Ons ‘tuig’ revolteert…. veel meer dan alleen de genen!

“In crisissen zoals de voorbije dagen in Frankrijk gaan de media al snel hun eigen titels geloven", schrijft hoofdredacteur Rik Van Cauwelaert als redactionele openingszin in het tijdschrift Knack (nr. 45). Hij heeft het over de revolte van “het tuig” of “het gespuis” in Parijs. “Racaille”, zo noemde de Minister van Binnenlandse Zaken, Nicolas Sarkozy, de revolterende jongeren uit de voorsteden.
Rik van Cauwelaert heeft gelijk: de media worden in deze jachtige tijden zo sterk opgedreven door een ‘information overload’, dat ze al snel hun eigen titels gaan geloven.
Twee grote titels prijken nu op de cover van diezelfde Knack. We zien een vuurzee op de achtergrond met daarvoor een paar zwarte schimmen: jongeren met de kap van hun sportcolbert over het verhitte hoofd getrokken. Een centrale titel, in vette letters, daarbovenop: “Frankrijk heeft ons gedumpt: ‘Het tuig’ revolteert”. En bovenaan, in de rook opgaand, een tweede titel: “Het ligt niet aan u! Moeilijke kinderen: genetisch bepaald!”
In crisissen gaan de media al snel hun eigen titels geloven. Het meer dan tien bladzijden tellende dossier dat gewijd is aan die moeilijke kinderen, bewijst dat het crisis is!
De farmaceutische ideologie delireert in onze tijden. “Het ligt niet aan u!” “Donkere wolken in uw hoofd? Stemmingsschommelingen? Een druk kind? Lusteloos? Moe? MorEPA omega-3 voor het behoud van het emotionele en fysieke welzijn, verbetert de concentratie, vermindert de stress, verhoogt de immuniteit, beschermt de huid tegen veroudering (…) voor kinderen vanaf 5 jaar. Natuurlijke aardbeiensmaak. (…) voor iedereen, van 10 tot 110 jaar. Natuurlijke citroensmaak. (…)”
Jawel, temidden van het dossier over de moeilijke kinderen, vinden we overal de propaganda van de farmalobby. Het wordt helemaal te gek als we dan nog het grijze kadertje lezen met als titel “Goed gebruik van geneesmiddelen”: “Pharma.be, de koepelorganisatie van Belgische farmaceutische bedrijven, werkte een ‘Charter voor het goed gebruik van geneesmiddelen’ uit, die bedoeld is voor kinderen van het lager onderwijs. (…)” Over opvoeding gesproken! Psycho-educatie noemt dat tegenwoordig. Ons geluk blijkt louter en alleen nog maar een zaak van ‘medical engineering’. Het is een pest!
Laat ons eerlijk zijn: dat het genetisch materiaal een soms aan het fatalisme grenzende invloed uitoefent op het gedrag van de mens, ja, dat wordt meer dan ooit duidelijk gemaakt door de wetenschap. Maar, diezelfde wetenschap – indien ze niet manisch geworden is -, maakt even goed duidelijk dat het niet enkel en alleen het genoom is dat een allesbepalende invloed uitoefent op ons gedrag! Bovendien kent men dat genoom niet eens! Laat staan de geneesmiddelen die steeds meer de kwintessens gaan vormen van de gezondheidszorg: “Meer dan de helft van de geneesmiddelen die vandaag gebruikt worden, is niet op kinderen getest.” Alleen het steeds dominanter en simplistischer wordende sciëntisme dat ‘gedragsproblemen’ uit de wereld wil helpen door de combinatie van een psychofarmaceutische coctail samen met een of andere vorm van cognitieve gedragstherapie, sluit op dat punt de ogen. De radicale uitsluiting van de subjectieve implicatie in de problemen van de mens, is een waan die werkelijk tot de revolte gaat aanzetten als men niet oppast.
Als er nu één iets is dat de moeilijke jongeren vandaag in de fik steken, dan is het toch net deze alles verslindende ideologie die hen tot “tuig” wil reduceren en er nog pseudo-wetenschappelijke bewijzen voor heeft ook. De soms schrijnende, aan het fatalisme grenzende, bepaaldheid door het sociale milieu waarin ze opgroeien, alsook de quasi onpeilbare invloed van de subjectieve keuzes die ze hebben gemaakt vanaf de prilste jeugd, wordt door het cynisme van het hedendaags sciëntisme volledig genegeerd.
Dat verdomme de media eens ophouden om klakkeloos zo’n ideologische bullshit te verkopen! Of er gaat een nieuwe hysterische golf uit voortkomen die warempel nog veel meer in de fik zal steken!

The FBI came calling in Windsor, Conn., this summer with a document marked for delivery by hand. On Matianuk Avenue, across from the tennis courts, two special agents found their man. They gave George Christian the letter, which warned him to tell no one, ever, what it said.

Under the shield and stars of the FBI crest, the letter directed Christian to surrender "all subscriber information, billing information and access logs of any person" who used a specific computer at a library branch some distance away. Christian, who manages digital records for three dozen Connecticut libraries, said in an affidavit that he configures his system for privacy. But the vendors of the software he operates said their databases can reveal the Web sites that visitors browse, the e-mail accounts they open and the books they borrow.

They took my mother and these two students into a room and fingerprinted all three of them. They then took their mug shots. They then recorded their iris data. After that they had to wait around for a while. My mother talked to Officer 2 who at this point was calmer, at least to her. She asked why the students were even pulled off the bus at all (even though she knew it was their ethnicity.) He had no answer, saying it was Officer 1's choice. She asked why Officer 1 has the power to do something like that, and he said these words: "Our President has changed the rules." She asked what those rules were, and he said "The new PATRIOT Act." ....

After more waiting around Officer 2 called a cab, which brought my mother and the two students back across the bridge into the Canadian border crossing. They then had to go through Canadian customs, which was unsurprisingly hassle-free, before taking another cab into Queenston and waiting until the bus returned to pick them up, as she had given her cell number to the other teacher. Feeling obviously distraught, she had talked a while with the Canadian border guard about what had just happened. The Canadian guard told her that in the last two weeks, since they "changed the rules," this kind of thing is going on constantly. He told her stories that were even worse than hers, like entire busses being impounded, literally sawed apart to bits right there, and the entire busload of people being thrown into jail overnight for no reason. He said the PATRIOT act allows them to do whatever they want without justification, and that's what they're doing. He said the Americans don't want visitors anymore, period. They're slowly closing the border to anything but commercial traffic.

Just 45 days after the September 11 attacks, with virtually no debate, Congress passed the USA PATRIOT Act. There are significant flaws in the Patriot Act, flaws that threaten your fundamental freedoms by giving the government the power to access to your medical records, tax records, information about the books you buy or borrow without probable cause, and the power to break into your home and conduct secret searches without telling you for weeks, months, or indefinitely.

Dataretention is no solution

The European ministers of Justice and the European Commission want to keep all telephone and internet traffic data of all 450 million Europeans. If you are concerned about this plan, please sign the petition.

What's wrong with data retention? The proposal to retain traffic data will reveal who has been calling and e-mailing whom, what websites people have visited and even where they were with their mobile phones. Telephone companies and internet services providers would be ordered to store all traffic data of their customers. Police and intelligence agencies in Europe would be granted access the traffic data. Various, competing proposals in Brussels mention retention periods from 6 months up to four years.

Data retention is an invasive tool that interferes with the private lives of all 450 million people in the European Union. Data retention is a policy that expands powers of surveillance in an unprecedented manner. It simultaneously revokes many of the safeguards in European human rights instruments, such as the Data Protection Directives and the European Convention on Human Rights.

Data retention means that governments may interfere with your private life and private communications regardless if you are suspected of a crime or not.

Data retention is not a solution to terrorism and crime!

In July 2005 the European Parliament adopted a report by Parliament member Alexander Alvaro on the mandatory data retention plan. The report concludes that the proposal is disproportionate. The report also questions the necessity, effectiveness and high costs for industry and telecommunication users.

No research has been conducted anywhere in Europe that supports the need and necessity of creating such a large-scale database containing such sensitive data for the purpose of fighting crime and terrorism.

The attacks on London are an attack on human rights. The protection of those human rights matters most when governments and societies face times of crisis. The worst possible response would be to jeopardise those carefully wrought rights by a panic-inspired response. A mass surveillance response to terror would result in a resounding success for the perpetrators of these attacks: a fundamental undermining of our most fundamental values.

What can you do to stop this plan?

If you are concerned about the European plans for data retention, please sign the petition and alert as many people as you can to support this campaign.
The signatures will be sent to the European Commission and the European Parliament.

Tegelijkertijd ondermijnt het voorstel de belangrijkste Europese verdragen en regelingen op het gebied van de rechten van de mens, zoals de privacy-richtlijnen en het Europees Verdrag van de Rechten van de Mens.

De bewaarplicht betekent uiteindelijk dat overheden zich mogen bemoeien met uw privé leven en privé communicatie, ongeacht of u wel of niet verdacht wordt van een misdrijf.

De bewaarplicht is geen oplossing voor terrorisme en criminaliteit!

In juli 2005 heeft het Europees Parlement vrijwel unaniem een rapport aangenomen van de Europees parlementariër Alexander Alvaro. Dit rapport concludeert dat de huidige voorstellen niet proportioneel zijn. Het rapport stelt ook vragen bij de noodzaak, effectiviteit en de hoge kosten voor het bedrijfsleven en de gebruikers van telecommunicatie.

Er is geen enkel onderzoek uitgevoerd in Europa dat de noodzaak en effectiviteit aantoont voor het aanleggen van een dergelijke grootschalige database, gevuld met zeer gevoelige persoonlijke gegevens. Het is dan ook volstrekt onduidelijk of deze database werkelijk helpt bij het bestrijden van terrorisme en misdrijven.

Wat kunt u doen om dit plan tegen te houden?

Als u zich zorgen maakt over de Europese plannen voor een bewaarplicht, teken dan alstublieft de petitie en breng zoveel mogelijk mensen op de hoogte van deze actie. De handtekeningen zullen aangeboden worden aan de Europese Commissie en het Europees Parlement.

San Francisco - A research team led by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) recently broke the code behind tiny tracking dots that some color laser printers secretly hide in every document.

The U.S. Secret Service admitted that the tracking information is part of a deal struck with selected color laser printer manufacturers, ostensibly to identify counterfeiters. However, the nature of the private information encoded in each document was not previously known.

"We've found that the dots from at least one line of printers encode the date and time your document was printed, as well as the serial number of the printer," said EFF Staff Technologist Seth David Schoen.

This flavor of action is not just for radicals. Civil disobedience is the role of citizens within the political system and has a much broader legacy than one was taught to think. Civil disobedience, practiced by various movements of people, has been responsible for forcing politicians to comply with the demands of its citizens. Civil disobedience is how “slavery was ended, civil rights were won, it’s how women won the right to vote, and it’s how Vietnam ended,” says Anthony Arnove, a writer, editor and activist based in New York.

Arnove believes that it’s important to realize that: “Civil disobedience is how we have won any change that we ever brought about in this country and it’s something that’s absolutely needed today if we want to challenge the course of the Bush administration and the Democratic Party.”

Civil disobedience may sound unappealing. After all, the very term makes this action seem deviant, and the common image is of protestors being arrested. But civil disobedience comes in many forms. It is the active refusal to obey certain laws or demands of government without resorting to physical violence. By understanding and reframing what civil disobedience is, it is easy to remove inhibition and see civil disobedience as a responsibility, rather than as a marginalized act.

Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove highlight the ever-present role of American civil disobedience in their new book, Voices of a People’s History of the United States. Selections from this collection of first-hand accounts, journal entries, speeches, personal letters, and published opinion pieces were read dramatically by actors including Danny Glover, Marissa Tomei, Sandra Oh, and many others at a Los Angeles event this month.

The parallels of history to the current situation were glaring. The audience could not help making sounds as they recognized this concordance of past and present.

Discussions of "tipping points" have, in recent times, largely been relegated to the war in Iraq where such moments, regularly predicted by the Bush administration, never arrive. In the meantime, an actual tipping point may have been creeping up on us on another front entirely, one that is anathema to this administration -- that of climate change.

The latest news from scientists laboring in cold climes has been startling. The expanse of Arctic sea ice has been shrinking in the summer since the late 1970s, though usually rebounding to near normal levels in the winter. Until recently. For the last few years, winter ice cover has been shrinking as well. This will be the fourth consecutive year of record, or near record, shrinkage of September sea ice in the Arctic. Scientists speculate that a threshold has been crossed.

"Experts at the U.S. National Snow and Data Center in Colorado," writes David Adam, environmental correspondent for the British Guardian, "fear the [Arctic] region is locked into a destructive cycle with warmer air melting more ice, which in turn warms the air further. Satellite pictures show that the extent of Arctic sea ice this month dipped some 20% below the long term average for September -- melting an extra 500,000 square miles, or an area twice the size of Texas. If current trends continue, the summertime Arctic Ocean will be completely ice-free well before the end of this century."

KuKLoS openingsbenefiet met o.a. the Joyous Cosmology

8 oktober houdt Kuklos, een nieuwe vzw, een openingsbenefiet in het Badhuis (Burchtgracht, Antwerpen, naast het Vleeshuis). Kuklos gaat zich bezighouden met de organisatie van evenementen waar beeldende kunsten, cinematografisch werk en muziek in verscheidene vormen worden gecombineerd. De manier waarop deze tot één evenement zullen worden gegoten zal telkens opnieuw, afhankelijk van de locatie en het beschikbare budget, aftasten en experimenteren worden.

Naast evenementen zal Kuklos ook functioneren als muziek/video label en uitgever van boekwerken en films die uit de commerciele/populaire markt vallen. Uiteraard wordt hier sterk geselecteerd op kwaliteit en zullen sporadisch sub-labels worden aangewend om bepaalde aaneensluitende uitgaven te groeperen en diversiteit niet gelijk te stellen met n'importe-quoi.

Momenteel heeft de vzw amper nog een eigen budget, daarom beginnen we 8 oktober met een bescheiden benefiet om onze kas wat te spijzen.

Het start in de namiddag, met een reeks optredens en een expositie. Voor de Optredens hebben we Inneke23, Zou, Raw Fish Boys en Joyous Cosmology. De Expositie wordt gevuld door een acht- tot tiental jonge kunstenaars en bestaat uit sculpturen en schilderijen / tekeningen. Details van wie er uiteindelijk allemaal aanwezig zal zijn worden spoedig hier op de site gezet. Na de optredens volgt een programma van film- en videoprojecties, Hier worden werken vertoond van onder andere Sara Schelkens, Maarten Tibos, Hakken Beuken & Dr. Sultan Aszazin. Hierna volgt een sound battle, waarin een tiental muzikanten tegen elkaar op gaan improviseren onder begeleiding van Hakken Beuken. Om af te sluiten hebben we enkele electronische live-acts van onder andere Hysteresis PartyTrasher.

The disturbing case of Abdul Amir Younes Hussein, the CBS cameraman who has been detained by U.S. forces in Iraq for over five months without a shred of evidence being publicly presented against him, has taken yet another bizarre turn.

As reported by the New York Times and Wall Street Journal last week, Hussein is a 25-year-old freelancer who has found himself trapped in a nightmare of secrecy, suspicion, and legal uncertainty since being wounded by U.S. forces while filming the aftermath of a car bombing in Mosul on April 5th.

At first the military expressed regret for Hussein's
minor injuries. But three days later they arrested him, claiming he had been "engaged in anti-coalition activity." Thus began his Kafka-esque legal odyssey, which has seen the reportedly timid reporter shuttled from prison to prison (including Abu Ghraib), while the military has changed its story multiple times, refused to release any evidence against him, refused to let Hussein be visited by friends or relatives, and rebuffed the efforts of CBS to have his case adjudicated in a conclusive manner.

De recentste ontwikkelingen in de IT-Technologie zoals Internet2, de cell-processor en andere beloven een haast totalitaire IT infrastructuur ... en wij ?

Internet2 beloof ongeziene overdrachtsnelheden, ongekende mogelijkheden tot beheersing van de informatiestroom, dit zowel qua beveiliging als in termen van kanalisering.

Maar: Beheersing betekent controle en controle betekent uiteindelijk kennis/macht.

Want: Binnen het digitale tijdperk waar vervagen de grenzen tussen macht en individu steeds sneller, wordt er zelfs gefluisterd over het einde van de democratie ... wat wordt het eigenlijk ? En waar plaatsen we een synthetisch organisme als Internet2.

Daarbij aansluitend wordt binnenkort de CELL (ibm,toshiba) processor gedemonstreerd wat gezien de griezelige performantie en de mogelijkheid tot het netwerken van computerkracht over de hele wereld te vergelijken valt met een 'bewustzijn' voor een dergelijk Internet2.

Naar aanleiding van de internationale dag van de Vrede op 21 september
brengt PROTOS een nieuwe studie uit:

“Water en conflicten”

Gent, 21/09/05

Water is de onvervangbare basis van alle leven op aarde. Water is de meest voorkomende materie op onze aarde. Geen wonder dat we onze biotoop de Blauwe Planeet noemen.

De toenemende waterschaarste komt vooral in de achteruitgang van kwantiteit en kwaliteit van de bestaande watervoorraden door de toegenomen vraag naar water, onder meer door de bevolkingstoename, toenemend waterverbruik, door irrigatielandbouw en door de industrie. Vandaag de dag hebben 1,2 miljard geen toegang tot drinkbaar water.
Talloze samenlevingen worden momenteel bedreigd door een tekort aan water, wat een probleem vormt voor het in stand houden en verder ontwikkelen van hun welvaart en welzijn en van de internationale en nationale stabiliteit.

De groeiende ongelijkheid in de verdeling van water kan leiden tot interne spanningen en internationale conflicten. De groeiende vraag naar water leidt steeds vaker tot een internationaal verdelingsprobleem. Wereldwijd zijn er 263 stroomgebieden die door meerdere landen worden gedeeld. Wanneer dit gegeven wordt gekoppeld aan de problemen die ontstaan door waterschaarste en groeiende armoede, is de link met interne en internationale conflicten over water snel gelegd.

Conflictbeheersing, ontwikkeling en milieubescherming gaan hand in hand. Een grondige mentaliteitswijziging, gesteund op ethische gronden, dringt zich op om een duurzaam en solidair beleid mogelijk te maken. Er moeten meer middelen gaan naar de uitbouw van “sociale voorraden”, zodat de meest kwetsbaren in onze samenleving beter bestand zijn tegen rampen en conflicten.

Als Niet-Gouvernementele Ontwikkelingsorganisatie (NGO) is PROTOS al jarenlang actief in een aantal Derde Wereldlanden waar projecten rond drinkwater en sanitatie worden ondersteund en begeleid. Er wordt gewerkt naar een rechtvaardig, participatief en duurzaam integraal waterbeheer in een stroombekken. Ook in Vlaanderen en op internationaal niveau neemt PROTOS actief deel aan de beweging voor een verantwoord waterbeheer.

Met deze brochure wil PROTOS een bijdrage leveren tot de discussie over de wereldomvattende waterproblematiek en de dreigende conflicten in verband met water. Het is daarbij niet de bedoeling om overal volledig te zijn of een volledig studiewerk af te leveren; wel om een leesbare inleiding te geven over deze problematiek, en voornamelijk om de positieve boodschap te geven dat door solidariteit, samenwerking en het meewerken aan de opbouw van een sterkere maatschappij, voornamelijk in het Zuiden, een dreiging van conflicten rond water vermeden kan worden.

Cindy Sheehan may be the Rosa Parks of the anti-war movement. But that didn't stop members of the New York Police Department from marching into the crowd of about 150 people gathered in Union Square Monday to hear her speak and yanking away the microphone.

The NYPD pulled the plug just as Sheehan was calling on the audience not to lose heart in the fight to end the war in Iraq.

"We get up every morning, and every morning we see this enormous mountain in front of us," said Sheehan, speaking on behalf of the other parents and family members of fallen soldiers who have taken up the crusade to bring the troops home.

"We can't go through it, we can't go under it, so we have to go over it," she continued, just as the cops rushed the makeshift podium.

Police dragged away Paul Zulkowitz, a.k.a. Zool, an organizer with “Camp Casey NYC,” the small encampment that he and other activists set up a month ago in Union Square in solidarity with Sheehan’s vigil outside President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas. The New York branch existed much to the ire of the city’s Parks Department. Today, Zulkowitz was arrested for failing to obtain a sound permit—a charge that normally warrants no more than a summons.

Moments earlier, Zulkowitz had been chastising Parks officials for refusing to grant a permit to the encampment, and accusing the police of trying to harass the antiwar protest away. Contrasting the liberal Big Apple with the hostile environs Sheehan faced in Crawford, Zulkowitz told the crowd: "You would think that here in New York City, at Union Square—our Hyde Park—you would think that we would little difficulty having a 24-hour vigil to oppose the war. In fact, we've had two arrests and eight summonses and endless harassment from the police for doing what we do."

As the activists hustled away Sheehan and the other family members on the Bring Them Home Now tour, an enraged crowd of about 50 people stormed after the police, chanting, "Shame! Shame!" Meanwhile Iraq war veteran and now peace activist Jeff Key played "God Bless America" on his trumpet.

Het Andere Boek euh… wat is dat ook alweer?

Op het weekend van 1 en 2 oktober vindt de 29ste editie van Het Andere Boek plaats in Antwerpen. Indymedia zal er samen met Radio Centraal verslag uitbrengen. Tijdens een rondvraag bij enkele jonge vrijwilligers bleek dat weinigen echter weten wat Het Andere Boek eigenlijk is. Vincent Scheltjens van Het Andere Boek geeft een korte schets.

Het Andere Boek is ontstaan in de jaren zeventig als een alternatieve boekenbeurs. Het is opgericht omdat er toen heel wat actiegroepen en sociale bewegingen waren die met publicaties en brochures zaten die niet aan bod kwamen in de traditionele massamedia. Men wou daarom een soort van alternatieve tegenmacht vormen tegen de gevestigde massapublicatie. Geïnspireerd door het voorbeeld van Nederland waar toen al een progressief alternatieve boekenbeurs was, besloot men om ook in België iets gelijkaardigs te organiseren. Een forum waar zowel sociale bewegingen als kleine alternatieve uitgeverijen hun boeken en folders aan de man konden brengen. Daarnaast werd het ook een plek waar maatschappelijke debatten werden gevoerd.

Maar in de loop van de jaren is het accent echter verschoven. Men klaagt dat Het Andere Boek niet meer zo alternatief is zoals vroeger, het is volgens sommigen een auteursfestival geworden. Volgens Vincent Scheltiens van Het Andere Boek, heeft men hiervoor niet gekozen maar valt dit te situeren in het kader van de algemene maatschappelijke evoluties. "Veel alternatieve uitgeverijen van die tijd zijn verdwenen of opgegaan in grotere uitgeverijen of ze bestaan nog maar zijn minder alternatief en meer mainstream geworden. Daarom is het Andere boek zich meer gaan concentreren op het kwalitatieve boek, dwz moeilijkere boeken van onbekende internationale auteurs en van debutanten in Vlaanderen en Nederland, die niet direct op de boekenbeurs gevraagd worden. Het accent blijft echter liggen op non-fictieboeken over maatschappelijke problemen of strijd. Ook de maatschappelijk debatten blijven aanwezig".

Dat weinig jongeren Het Andere Boek kennen, verbaast Vincent niet. "Jongeren zijn sowieso een moeilijker doelgroep om te bereiken met zoiets als het Andere Boek. Dat is trouwens een algemeen probleem voor vele boekenevenementen" Volgens hem heeft dit te maken met het feit dat er een algemene trend is naar achteruitgang in leesgedrag bij jongeren. Daarenboven heeft Het Andere Boek in vergelijking met sommige ander boekenevenementen zoals de Boekenbeurs slechts twee dagen per jaar plaats. Het komt dus minder aan bod in de media.

Het document dat opgesteld is onder leiding van luchtmachtgeneraal Richard Myers, voorzitter van de gezamenlijke legerstafchefs somt tal van scenario’s op die het gebruik van kernwapens rechtvaardigen. Commentaar bij het opwarmen van de aarde, de Galapagos eilanden en de ramp in New Orleans. Door kapitein Paul Watson – Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

Neptunus lachte de Farley Mowat toe toen we op 16 augustus 2005 de haven van Jacksonville, Florida, uitvoeren.
We reisden op een kalme zee door de Straat van Florida, langs de westkust van Cuba en door het Panamakanaal op weg naar de prachtige eilanden van de Galapagos archipel.

Het leek op het oversteken van een meer. En dat was geen toeval. Als zeeman met meer dan dertig jaar ervaring op de oceanen ken ik orkanen en zeelieden ontwikkelen een soort extra zintuig om ze te voorspellen. Ik wist dat er een orkaan zou komen. Terwijl we over de kalme wateren voeren wist ik dat het de stilte voor de onvermijdelijke storm was. Katrina was ontstaan in de zuidelijke Atlantische Oceaan en de God van de Wind was van plan om een orkaan van de vierde categorie naar de kust van New Orleans te sturen.

New Orleans leefde al jaren op geleende tijd. Alleen een volslagen onverschillige op het gebied van ecologie en meteorologie moet verbaasd zijn geweest over wat er gebeurde toen Karina toesloeg. Maar er zijn veel van dat soort mensen, vooral in Amerika en met name in Louisiana.

New Orleans bewijst dat al onze voorspellingen over de opwarming van de aarde kloppen. Milieudeskundigen voorspellen al meer dan twintig jaar de komst van superstormen en al twintig jaar worden deze voorspellingen genegeerd of weggelachen.
Bedenk dat Katrina midden in het orkaanseizoen toesloeg. Tien dagen later zal Nate op weg gaan naar Bermuda, vervolgens is Ophelia klaar voor de aanval en in november zullen we orkaan Zelda zien. Volgend jaar zal het ernstiger zijn en ieder volgend jaar wordt het erger.

De opwarming van de aarde en de radicale klimaatsverandering vinden op dit moment plaats. Het gebeurt NU.
Het is Thermageddon en niet Armageddon dat onze ondergang zal veroorzaken.

Maar er is geen reden om wakker te liggen. De beurs daalde maar herstelde zich weer en George W. Bush laat nog steeds uitzoeken of er wel sprake is van opwarming van de aarde. De rest van de wereld houdt zich aan het Kyoto Verdrag en dat betekent dat men met een gerust geweten kan doorgaan met autorijden. New Orleans is misschien wel verdwenen, maar in Amerika is iedereen weer ‘back to business as usual’. Oliemaatschappijen boeken zelfs grotere winsten omdat ze de orkaan gebruiken als excuus om de prijzen op te schroeven.

Milieudeskundigen moeten zich niet langer concentreren op het voorlichten van mensen over het dreigende gevaar van de klimaatsverandering. We moeten de mensen leren om te leven in een warmer wordende wereld. We zijn een stel dromers. De mens zal altijd blijven ontkennen. Maar we moeten het toch proberen, het is namelijk onze taak om met gezond verstand in te praten op degenen die nog enig verstand hebben.

Eén van de eerste dingen die we moeten doen is mensen waarschuwen om niet op de Golfkust of in bepaalde delen van Florida te gaan wonen. Grapje. Ik weet ook wel dat dit nooit zal gebeuren, hoewel het logisch en verstandig zou zijn. En natuurlijk zal de opwarming van de aarde andere gebieden op andere manieren beïnvloeden, zodat op lange termijn niemand zal kunnen ontsnappen.

Onze voorspellingen zijn jarenlang genegeerd en mensen willen nog steeds niet luisteren en zich aanpassen. Zelfs vele duizenden in New Orleans kozen niet de weg van het gezonde verstand toen de catastrofe naderde. Zie dit als een vorm van vervreemding van de natuur.
Een excuus was dat de mensen te arm waren om te vluchten. De stammen die de Tsunami in Indonesië overleefd hebben, waren tussen haakjes nog armer. Zij beschikten over gezond verstand om zich te realiseren dat terugtrekkend water voorbode is van de ondergang en hadden geen weerman nodig om te weten van waar de wind komt. Ze trokken naar hoger gelegen gebieden. De slachtoffers van New Orleans hadden een weerman, maar luisterden niet naar hem.

Ja, de federale, provinciale en locale overheden waren onbekwaam. Tja, ze zijn altijd onbekwaam, dus dat is geen excuus en nauwelijks een verrassing. Het gezonde verstand dat op dit moment in New Orleans is overgebleven, is te danken aan de burgemeester, die blijkbaar als enige nog bij zinnen is.

Aan de positieve kant, de Aarde slaat eindelijk terug en de ecologische wetten laten zien dat we de reactie van de natuur, als gevolg van onze daden, nu en in de toekomst zullen merken. De reacties zullen vergelijkbaar zijn met de daden die ze veroorzaakten.
Al die koolstofemissies zetten een gigantische ecologische omwenteling in gang. Meer koolstof heeft grote consequenties voor de klimaatsverandering. Meer mensen betekent meer koolstof. Meer mensen houden er een exorbitante levensstijl op na wat meer koolstof betekent. Oh, sorry, lijkt dit een hint naar immigratie? Ik was het bijna vergeten, dat moet ik niet doen - nee, nee, nee, ik moet de mantra herhalen – “meer mensen uit de schoot van Amerika is slecht, maar meer mensen van buiten de grenzen is goed.”

Dit verwart mij omdat ik het verschil niet zie tussen bevolkingsgroei door geboorte of door immigratie, behalve dat het niet “Politiek Correct” is om tegen bevolkingsgroei door immigratie te zijn.
Oh ja, het aantal mensen neemt niet toe, ze worden alleen verplaatst. Natuurlijk worden ze wel verplaatst naar een locatie waar ze een auto en een energieverslindende woning bezitten en dus zorgen voor meer koolstofuitstoot, maar ik zal ophouden en mij schikken naar het partijstandpunt – toename door immigratie staat niet ter discussie en we hoeven er niet bezorgd over te zijn. En, nu Renquist dood is staan de krachten klaar om Roe vs Wade and Lory omver te werpen, dus laten we doorgaan en vermenigvuldigen.

Vlak voordat ik de Galapagos verliet, deed Fanny Uribe, Senator voor de eilanden en de “uitverkorene” van de vissers, een pracht van een uitspraak, “De enige soort op de Galapagos die het waard is tegen uitsterven beschermd te worden, is de mens.”
Zo te horen kan ze een goede christelijke rechtse Republikein worden.

Mijn waarnemingen van de afgelopen zeven jaar op de Galapagos zijn een les in ecologie geweest waar, net als Darwin de realiteit van de evolutie zag in wat hij op de grond waarnam, we nu in de microkosmos de realiteit van het effect van onze numerieke toename op het ecosysteem kunnen zien.

Een paar dagen geleden ontmoette ik voormalig Marine handhavingchef Pable Salas op straat in Puerto Ayora op het eiland Santa Cruz. Vorig jaar was hij ons voornaamste contact op het Nationaal Park. Dit jaar is hij kapitein op een rondvaartboot en heeft hij plannen om met zijn vrouw en twee kinderen naar Canada te emigreren. “Het is over en uit voor dit gebied” , vertelde hij mij. “Er is geen toekomst voor de Galapagos en voor Equador. Als er enige toekomst voor mijn kinderen is weggelegd dan is het in Canada.”

Tot zo ver de Galapagos. Vijf jaar geleden lagen er Zeeleguanen te zonnen op de voetpaden in Puerto Ayora. Ze zijn er jammer genoeg niet meer – enkel meer mensen, meer auto’s, meer honden, meer bouwwerken, meer middelen, meer beschaving.

En wat betreft New Orleans, de stad heeft decennia op geleende tijd geleefd. De Mississippi heeft de neiging haar stoomgebied te veranderen en had dit jaren geleden al moeten doen. Maar de bemoeizucht van de ingenieurs van het Amerikaanse leger besliste er anders over en die bemoeizucht is in vele opzichten verantwoordelijk voor de catastrofe die heeft plaatsgevonden. Het ingenieurskorps had zijn speeltjes van de modderige oevers van de “Big Muddy” weg moeten houden en de natuur haar gang moeten laten gaan. Ze zal haar zin toch doordrijven ondanks de relatief onbeduidende vertraging die is opgetreden door onze sukkelachtige ingrepen.
New Orleans zou verlaten moeten worden, net zoals de ruines van Anastzi, zodat het kan wegzakken in het giftige slib van de delta, waar het thuis hoort.

Oh, trouwens, de eilanden die tientallen jaren een buffer vormden tussen de zee en de kustlijn zijn … weg! Yep, ze zijn er niet meer, weggespoeld met de wind van Katrina. Als dit niet bewijst hoe ernstig deze stormen zijn geworden dan weet ik niet meer wat het wel bewijst.

Oh, mijn excuses, doe ik mij nu voor als een paniekzaaier?

Voor milieuactivisten is nu het moment aangebroken om de leiding te nemen en de stem te laten horen, hoe onpopulair de boodschap ook is. Maar dit zal wellicht niet gebeuren wegens het negatieve effect op de ledenaantallen van de milieuorganisaties. Het publiek wil namelijk geen voorspelling horen van ondergang en somberheid, hoe realistisch deze ook zijn en zelfs als ze kunnen worden benut om ons aan te passen aan de komende escalatie van consequenties.

Als wij de Galapagos niet kunnen redden, hoe kunnen we dan New Orleans of welke plaats dan ook redden.

Als het wordt heropgebouwd, en ik ben er van overtuigd dat men het zal proberen, zal de stad volgend jaar opnieuw worden getroffen en het daarop volgende jaar opnieuw. Tijd om ons verlies te aanvaarden en weg te trekken voor de oprukkende vergelding van de woede der natuur. Laat New Orleans wegzinken in het slijk van de delta.

Een ander ding dat duidelijk werd door New Orleans is de demonstratie aan de rest van de wereld hoe ongelooflijk slecht georganiseerd Amerika is geworden en hoe ineffectief het leiderschap van George Bush werkelijk is. Het lijken beelden van een natuurramp in de Derde Wereld.

Het is één ding om met superieure megawapens ten oorlog te trekken en een inferieure strijdmacht tegen de kont te schoppen, maar het is iets totaal anders om de strijd aan te gaan met de krachten van de natuur.
George heeft laten zien dat hij en het land niet zijn voorbereid op de klimaatsverandering en dat deze onvoorbereidheid een direct gevolg is van het ontkennende beleid van zijn regering op het gebied van de opwarming van de aarde. In plaats van een ervaren rampenbestrijder, nam George Michael Brown in dienst, een vriend van een vriend en fokker van Arabische paarden. George heeft hem waarschijnlijk voor een Saudi aangezien. Hoe het ook zij, een vriend of een vriend van een vriend aanstellen in een functie die ervaring en vaardigheden vereist, dat is iets wat die bananenrepublieken ook doen, of niet soms?

Dus nu New Orleans het nieuwe Atlantis is en de Galapagos in sneltreinvaart ontgoochelde eilanden worden, de Amerikaanse Hoge Raad op het punt staat overgenomen te worden door op de bijbel hammerende kinderfokkers, en de autoverkoop toeneemt ondanks brandstofprijzen die de pan uitswingen, is het duidelijk dat het einde der dagen dichterbij is dan zelfs de meest geschifte rechtse Christenen zouden denken.

We leven werkelijk in een interessante tijd.

Neptune smiled on the Farley Mowat when we left Jacksonville, Florida on August 16th, 2005.
We voyaged on calm seas down to the Straits of Florida, slipped past the west coast of Cuba and made our way to the Panama Canal, and on to the Enchanted Isles of the Galapagos.
It was like crossing a pond. And it was no accident. As a seaman with over three decades on the big blue, I do know hurricanes and over the years sailors do acquire an instinct for them.

And I did know that one was coming. As we passed through those calm waters, I knew we were seeing the calm before the inevitable storms. The seeds of Katrina had been sown in the south Atlantic and the lord of storms was preparing to send a major category 4 hurricane to ravage the Gulf Coast.
New Orleans had been living on borrowed time for years. Only the ecologically and meteorologically ignorant should have been be surprised at what happened when Katrina struck. But then again, there are many such people, especially in America and notably in Louisiana.

New Orleans is the realization of all our predictions on global warming. Environmentalists have been predicting the super storms for over two decades and for two decades the predictions have been ignored and ridiculed.

Consider that Katrina struck mid Hurricane season. Ten days later we have Nate heading for Bermuda and Ophelia ready to pounce, and we will see Hurricane Zelda by November.

Next year will be worse and it will worsen every year hereafter.

Global warming and radical climate change is a full blown happening event. It is NOW.

It is Thermageddon and not Armageddon that will be our downfall.

No need to worry overly much, the stock market took a hit but recovered and George W. Bush is still investigating if this global warming thing has any evidence of existing. The rest of the world has embraced the Kyoto Protocols which means they can drive their cars with a clear conscience. New Orleans may be gone but it is back to business as usual in America and for the oil companies it's back to business with bigger profits since they decided to use the hurricane as yet another excuse to gouge profits from the public.

Environmentalists need not concentrate any longer on educating people about impending climate change. We must now focus on teaching people how to adapt to living in a warmer and climatologically evolved world. We are such dreamers. People will continue to live in denial. But we need to try anyway, that is our job after all, speaking common sense to those who have little sense at all.

And one of the first things we should do is to warn people to not live on the Gulf coast or in parts of Florida or on the Outer Banks of the Carolinas. Just kidding. I know that will not happen even if it is the logical, practical, most intelligent thing to do. And of course global warming will impact other areas in different ways so there is really no escape for anyone in the long run.

Our predictions have been ignored for decades and people still have not demonstrated the good sense to listen and adapt. Hell, many thousands did not demonstrate the good sense to get out of New Orleans in the face of certain catastrophe. Chalk this up to alienation from nature. One excuse was that the people were to poor to leave. The tribes that survived the Tsunami in Indonesia were the poorest people by the way. They had the good sense to know that receding water is an indication of impending doom. They did not need a weatherman to know which way the wind blew. They left for higher ground. The victims of New Orleans had weathermen but chose not to listen to them.

Yes the federal, state and local governments were incompetent. Duh, they are always incompetent so that is not an excuse and hardly a surprise. They continue to be incompetent and it appears that the only one with his wits about him is the Mayor of New Orleans who deserves a great deal of credit for what sanity exists in New Orleans today.

On the brighter side, the Earth is at last striking back and the laws of ecology are demonstrating that for all our actions we are now, and will continue to experience natural reactions. The reactions will be equal to the actions taken to bring about the reactions. All those carbon emissions are triggering an ecological upheaval of truly mammoth proportions. More carbon means greater consequences in climate change. More people means more carbon. More people living apex consumer life styles means more carbon emissions. Oh I'm sorry did I just hint at immigration there. I almost forgot, I must not do that - no, no, no, I must repeat the mantra - "more people from wombs in America is bad but more people from beyond the borders is good." This confuses me because I can't see the difference between addition from births and addition from immigration except it is P.C. to oppose the former and not the latter. Oh yes, the numbers don't increase they are just relocated. Of course they are relocated to a place where they can now own a car and mega-energy wasteful domiciles thus increasing carbon emissions but I shall desist and return to the party line - i.e. increases through immigration are not to be discussed nor should we be concerned about it. And now with Rehnquist dead - the forces are in place to overturn Roe vs Wade and Lordy, let us go forth and multiply.

Just before I left the Galapagos, Fanny Uribe, Senator for the islands and the "chosen one" of the fisherman said this gem of a quote, "the only species in the Galapagos worth saving is the human species."

Sounds like she would make a good christian right wing Republican.

My observations of the Galapagos over the last seven years has been a lesson in ecology for whereas just as Darwin could see the reality of evolution in what he observed on the ground in these islands, we can now see in microcosm the reality of the affect of our increasing numbers on eco-systems.

A few days ago I met former Marine enforcement chief Pablo Salas on the street in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz island. Last year he was our main contact at the National Park. This year he is a captain of a tour boat and making plans to immigrate with his wife and two children to Canada. "This place is finished." He told me. "There is no future for the Galapagos and none for Ecuador. If my children have any future at all it is in Canada."

So much for the Galapagos. Five years ago there were marine iguanas sunning themselves on the sidewalk in Puerto Ayora. No more, sadly no more - just more people, more cars, more dogs, more construction, more appliances, more civilization.

As for New Orleans, the city has been living on borrowed time for decades. The Mississippi intends to change course and should have changed course years ago thanks to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers whose meddling is responsible in many ways for the disaster just experienced. The Corp of Engineers should keep their toys off the banks of the Big Muddy and let nature take her course which she will do anyway despite the relatively trivial delays caused by our blundering interference. New Orleans should be abandoned like the ruins of the Anastazi and allowed to sink into the toxic delta mud where it belongs. There is no future for New Orleans and of that I am certain. New Orleans is our modern day Atlantis.

Oh by the way, the barrier islands that have buffered the Gulf Coast for centuries are - - Gone! Yep they are no more, washed away by the winds of Katrina and if that does not indicate just how severe these storms have become, I don't know what will.

Oh I'm sorry am I being alarmist?

Environmentalists must show leadership now and we must speak out no matter how unpopular the message. This will probably not happen as it will certainly affect membership numbers for environmental organizations because the public does not want to hear predictions of doom and gloom even if real, and even if such predictions can be utilized to adapt to the escalation of consequences.

If we can't save the Galapagos, how can we save New Orleans or anywhere else for that matter.

If rebuilt as I'm sure they will try, next year this city will be hit again and it will be hit again the next year. Time to cut our losses and retreat before the thundering advance of Nature's retaliatory fury. Let New Orleans sink into the sludge of the delta.

One other thing that came out of New Orleans is that it certainly demonstrated to the world just how incredibly disorganized the United States has become with third world casualties now happening from natural disasters and just how ineffective a leader George Bush really is.

It is one thing to kick ass with superior mega-weapons against an vastly inferior military force and it is quite something else to take on the forces of nature. George demonstrated that he and the nation are unprepared for climate change and that this unpreparedness is a direct result of the denial of his administration concerning the reality of global warming. Instead of a skilled disaster responder, George appointed Michael Brown, a friend of a friend whoses resume shows him as a breeder of Arabian horses. George probably mistook him for a Saudi. Nevertheless appointing friends and friends of friends to important jobs that require skill and experience, why that's what those banana republics do, isn't it?

So with New Orleans now the new Atlantis and the Galapagos rapidly becoming the disenchanted islands, with the U.S. Supreme Court about to be taken over by the bible thumping breeders, and with car sales increasing despite escalating fuel prices, it is plain to see that the end of days may be closer than even the right wing wacko Christians may think.

We do indeed live in interesting times.

Hurricane Katrina ripped through New Orleans last week with winds tearing through the city at more than 150 miles per hour. According to weather experts, Katrina has the strongest central force of any recorded storm in United States history other than the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. The storm’s damage is still being calculated but it may leave over one million people in three states homeless, five million without power, and unknown numbers dead. Torrential rains inundated the coast and forced more than half a million residents to evacuate, leaving ten thousand huddling in the New Orleans Superdome. Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida have all reported deaths due to “America’s Tsunami.” Yet despite the strength of Katrina’s impact, it is only one of many natural disasters that have wreaked havoc in the past year.

In the past twelve months, the world has experienced a record number of natural atrocities. A deadly heat wave in Arizona with record-setting temperatures above 110 degrees is suspected to have killed more than 30 people. Renewed heat warnings are being issued for the region during the writing of this article. In July, the worst drought in recorded history triggered wildfires in Spain and Portugal and left water levels in France at their lowest point in 30 years. In December, the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph generated a tsunami that killed more than 150,000 people, making it one of the deadliest disasters in modern history. Over one thousand people died in Bombay, India when the city received 37 inches of rain in one day setting another record and bringing the state and the lives of 20 million people to a watery halt. Hurricane Katrina is the latest of these disasters, and already, 100 people have been reported dead. But despite everything the world has experienced this year, as Al Jolson once said, “you ain’t heard nothin’ yet.”

The text of the verdict in the case of journalist Shi Tao - sentenced in April to 10 years in prison for “divulging state secrets abroad” - shows that Yahoo ! Holdings (Hong Kong) Ltd. provided China’s state security authorities with details that helped to identify and convict him, Reporters Without Borders said today.

“We already knew that Yahoo ! collaborates enthusiastically with the Chinese regime in questions of censorship, and now we know it is a Chinese police informant as well,” the press freedom organisation said.

“Yahoo ! obviously complied with requests from the Chinese authorities to furnish information regarding an IP address that linked Shi Tao to materials posted online, and the company will yet again simply state that they just conform to the laws of the countries in which they operate,” the organisation said. “But does the fact that this corporation operates under Chinese law free it from all ethical considerations ? How far will it go to please Beijing ?”

Reporters Without Borders added : “Information supplied by Yahoo ! led to the conviction of a good journalist who has paid dearly for trying to get the news out. It is one thing to turn a blind eye to the Chinese government’s abuses and it is quite another thing to collaborate.”

Translated into English by the Dui Hua Foundation (which works to document the cases of Chinese political prisoners), the verdict reveals that Yahoo ! Holdings (Hong Kong) Ltd. provided the Chinese investigating organs with detailed information that apparently enabled them to link Shi’s personal e-mail account (huoyan-1989@yahoo.com.cn) and the specific message containing information treated as a “state secret” to the IP address of his computer.

Yahoo ! Holdings (Hong Kong) is subject to Hong Kong legislation, which does not spell out the responsibilities in this kind of situation of companies that provide e-mail services. Nonetheless, it is reportedly customary for e-mail service and Internet access providers to transmit information to the police about their clients when shown a court order.

Tests carried out by Reporters Without Borders seem to indicate that the servers used for the Yahoo.com.cn e-mail service, from which the information about Shi was extracted, are located on the Chinese mainland.

Shi Tao Aged 37, Shi worked for the daily Dangdai Shang Bao (Contemporary Business News). He was convicted on 30 April of sending foreign-based websites the text of an internal message which the authorities had sent to his newspaper warning journalists of the dangers of social destabilisation and risks resulting from the return of certain dissidents on the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Chinese state security insisted during the trial that the message was "Jue Mi" (top secret). Shi admitted sending it out by e-mail but disputed that it was a secret document. He is still being held in a prison in Changsha to which he was sent after his arrest in the northeastern city of Taiyuan on 24 November 2004.

Yahoo ! and Chinese censorship For years Yahoo ! has allowed the Chinese version of its search engine to be censored. In 2002, Yahoo ! voluntarily signed the "Public Pledge on Self-Discipline for the China Internet Industry", agreeing to abide by PRC censorship regulations. Searches deemed sensitive by the Chinese authorities such as “Taiwan independence” in Chinese into the Yahoo ! China search engine, retrieve only a limited and approved set of results.

A US-based multinational, Yahoo ! Appears to be willing to go to any lengths to gain shares of the Chinese market and it is investing heavily in local companies. In 2003, it spent 120 million dollars to buy the search engine 3721.com. More recently Yahoo ! acquired a large stake in the Internet giant Alibaba in an operation that reportedly cost nearly a billion dollars. Reporters Without Borders has written several times to Yahoo ! executives in an attempt to alert it to the ethical issues raised by its Chinese investments. These letters have so far received no answer.

The Danish police has raided part of Christiania in Copenhagen, Denmark. About 200 riot police stormed the freestate and quickly sealed off 'Fredens Eng' (The Meadow of peace) which is a part of the site, where people live in trailers. In one of the biggest mass arrests in Denmark ever, the police made over 100 arrests. There are various reports of injured people. Most people have been charged with not following police orders, although some with charges relating to violence against the police.

Christinia had been self adminstrative, meaning no permit was needed to 'build' new property or have trailers parked up on it's grounds. Newly introduced law, means trailers have to leave, so new development can take place. The people from Christiania have resisted this new legislation for years. They wish to keep their autonomy and self managed decision making structures that have kept the place running for over 20 years...

"Flying Over Natura 2000", a project of discovery…

« Flying Over Natura 2000 » is a project aimed at discovering the Natura 2000 network. You can discover the Natura 2000 sites via the migrations of black storks Indeed, every year, these birds undertake long journeys across Europe to their African wintering grounds. Their movements can be followed thanks to a radio transmitter, attached to the stork like a mini backpack and relayed by satellites.

In each of the eight participating countries, two storks are our ambassadors. They come from

* Belgium,
* France,
* Luxembourg,
* Spain,
* Hungary,
* the Czech Republic,
* Estonia
* and Latvia.

Every day during their long journey, these storks send a « postcard », or small TV clip, to television viewers. These show the places they have flown over, principally the Natura 2000 sites (or future sites), with their characteristics, biodiversity and ongoing human activities.
The media in each country will follow their favourite storks. They will provide daily bulletins of their peregrinations and adventures, both good and bad, illustrated by the « postcard » of the site concerned.

The migratory paths of the birds are quite well known thanks to two previous black stork satellite-tracking experiments:

There are two main paths crossing Europe: one flies over the Straits of Gibraltar whereas the other crosses the Bosphorus.

So here's the primer. In short, firefighters who volunteered to help save and help people, were instead forced to act as human props as Bush walked around pretending to do stuff.

I guess this is what Bush was talking about yesterday when he called himself a "problem solver." But one of these days he and the Rovians really ought to take a stab at trying to solve other people's problems.

I'm just surprised they didn't shove some boots and a helmet on Shrub and stick him behind the wheel of a fire engine. Maybe with a big banner on the side: "Lets Roll!"

So what's next? Will they round up some doctors and have them tag along with Shrub while he visits patients at an emergency field hospital? (Ideally, a tidy tent full of young, attractive African American patients -- nothing bloody or threatening.) Surely that can be arranged.

Or how about a town meeting with the engineers plugging the levee breaks? They could explain what they're doing and show Shrub their plans, and he could nod his head and pretend like he understands what they're talking about. That shouldn't take more than a half a day out of their schedule. And what's another half day when most of those people have been trapped in their attics for a week already?

Now, the firefighters who volunteered to help and save people, and have been ignored and neglected by FEMA unless it's to act as human props for Dear Leader. And god forbid they get pissed about it!

I realize you love your ranch; you've spent almost a year of your presidency there, doing important things like clearing brush, eating pretzels, and taking naps. But that's exactly why you need to sell it. So many people have lost their homes; the least you can do is give up ownership of one of your many residences for their benefit to show that you have some trace of compassion. Think of it as a symbolic gesture that you're finally ready to stop running away from the responsibilities of the Oval office, and you're ready to meet head-on the full duties of the highest office in the land.

Op 24 september hoopt de Amerikaanse vredesbeweging 100.000 mensen op de been te brengen rond het Witte Huis in Washington. De centrale slogan: “Stop the war on Iraq, bring the troops home now!”.

Behalve een vredesmars staat er ook een muziekfestival op het programma, “Operation Cease Fire”, gepresenteerd door Jello Biafra (vroeger zanger van de legendarische“The Dead Kennedies”) met o.a. “The Thievery Corporation”.

Cindy Sheehan zal ook van de partij zijn: zij kampeerde met honderden medestanders bij de ranch van Bush (Crawford, Texas) terwijl de president daar zijn vakantie doorbracht. Ze eiste dat hij haar “face to face” zou uitleggen voor welke “good cause” haar zoon Casey (en ondertussen ruim 1500 anderen) in Irak sneuvelde. Op 31 augustus vertrokken vanuit “Camp Casey” in Crawford drie bussen van de “Bring Them Home Tour”, met veteranen en familieleden van gesneuvelden. Elke bus zal via een andere route naar Washington rijden, onderweg wordt er gemobiliseerd voor de manifestatie.

De 2 belangrijkste organisatoren, “United For Peace and Justice” (UFPJ) en “Act Now, Stop War, End Racism” (ANSWER), hopen op een massale opkomst nu de amerikaanse publieke steun voor de oorlog Irak een dieptepunt kent: Cindy Sheehan hield met haar “camp casey” actie de oorlog zowat de hele zomer in de media-schijnwerpers. De rampspoed in New Orleans toonde dan weer hoezeer de oorlogsinspanningen ten koste gingen van preventie (besparingen op dijkverstevigingen) en hulpverlening (het leger stond machteloos wegens gebrek aan personeel en materiaal).

International recording stars Thievery Corporation are bringing together several notable musical acts such as Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, Le Tigre, Bouncing Souls, country music recording artist Steve Earle, socially conscious hip hop groups like The Coup, the rock 'n soul group The Bellrays, along with progressive activists/performers Head-Roc, Jello Biafra, Wayne Kramer of the MC5 and many others for a free concert on the Washington Monument grounds.

The concert is part of the three days of massive anti-war activities being planned in Washington, DC by United for Peace and Justice. It will cap a full day that starts with a late morning rally, a march through downtown Washington and an anti-war fair on the grounds of the Washington Monument. UFPJ is delighted to be working with the concert producers to add the event into the full program of the weekend.

Cindy Sheehan continues to ask George W. Bush what the "Noble Cause" was for which her son died in Iraq, and why Bush's daughters haven't enlisted in this Cause.

While Bush talked to us about WMDs, an imminent "mushroom cloud," and tried to link Saddam and Iraq to 9/11 (when it was 14 Saudis who hit the World Trade Center), those all fell apart and were exposed (by no less than Paul Wolfowitz) as intentional lies. When Bush shifted his Noble Cause to invading Iraq to bring democracy to the Iraqi people, the Downing Street Memo told another story. And now, also, so does Bush's first biographer.

It's becoming increasingly clear that the way Bush lied us into invading Iraq, particularly the timing of it all (ginning it up just before the 2002 midterm elections), was done largely so Republicans could win take back the Senate in 2002 after losing it because of Jim Jeffords' defection, and so Bush could win the White House in the election of 2004.

It's apparently just that simple, just that banal, and ultimately just that traitorous to the traditional ideals of America.

In the night of sunday 28, almost 300 subsaharian migrants tried to cross the border between Morocco and Melilla (Spain). The plan was orginized in the (self- organized) camp "Gurugú" that is in the forest near the border. With more than 50 handmade stairs and conected by mobile phones started the "asault" to the border. In the beginin more than 70 could cross when lots of spanish militar police (Guardia Civil) arrived and started a brutal repression. After 45 minutes of confrontation (and with the presence already of the morocian police) 2 migrants from Camerun died and there are lots of injuried people.
The morning of monday, 08.29 has been tragic. Two comrades from Camerun left with us towards the gate that separates the Mariguari Mountain, in Morocco, from the city of Melilla.

We were a number, the cops were looking for us: it's a fight, a struggle, as it usually is. But the struggle is unfair, they have gases that asphyxiate us, they have plastic bullets. They have real bullets too, and sometimes you can hear them at night. We have our hands and our feet, and the idea not to react. What is important is the collective, and it is the hope that sustained us along the way to Europe from our origin countries. Two, three years we were on this way.

The cops have long truncheons too, falling hardly and quickly on our bodies, breaking our bones and our hope. Some of these truncheon are electrified, and you can feel your body trembling, you cannot breath anymore, and you feel that you are dying.

This day was as many other. This time there were no Moroccan cops, it was us and the Spanish guardia civil. Many of us went through the gate, we were in Melilla, the guardia civil opened the little door and sent us back to Morocco. The cops sent back the wounded, the healthy. And they sent back two dead bodies.

The night was dark, we were afraid that the Moroccan military could come and deport us to Oujda (on the border with Algeria), finishing the job of the guardia civil. So we hid in the bush. Only in the morning we found the body of one of our brothers, apparenly dead. We also saw in the light of the dawn the heads of the police close to the gate, and we realized that something terrible had happened. The Moroccan said that there was another dead body.

We were standing close to the corpse, we made a couple of phone call, asking for help, trying to make the international authorities aware of what was happening. Somebody came, filmed saw and could witness that we are saying the truth. Also Mediciens sans Frontieres saw the wounded and one of the corpses, they also know that one of the two dead had his stomach wounded. Why then all this silence?

We, the illegal as they call us, the one that have no voice, swear by our dignity (because, although they kill us we still have our dignity as human beings) that we witnessed how our comrades have been hit until death, that the Spanish cops opened up the little door and threw the two corpses away towards Morocco as if they were dogs.

And we now that we will return to the gate. Many of us are escaping from hunger and war, but we are not afraid: although all the officials leave us alone, we know that we are human beings and that we did not do anything, that the murderers are not among us, and that at least god
knows all this.

We ask all social organizations to join this call for justice. We ask all organizations that witnessed the facts to denounce them. We demand from the Spanish government to respect art. 157 of the immigration law.

Despite years old warnings that New Orleans was a major risk for flooding following a hurricane, funding was slashed and Louisiana State and US Federal rescue services have now been unable to cope with the developing tragedy in the wake of Hurricane Katrina earlier this week. Transcendental Meditation
The complexity and variety of meditative techniques can be awe inspiring. There are a great many to choose from and various aspects of each to be learned. But at the heart of them lies transcendental meditation (TM). A practice rooted in ancient times but outlined by Maharishi Mahesh in 1957, TM is as beneficial for the novice as it is for the experienced practitioner. It is simple, neither a way of life nor a spiritual belief, and can be practiced by anyone of any age or lifestyle. The strength of TM's effectiveness is in one's personal mantra, which, according to Mahesh, can be any word, name, or syllable that has meaning for you. Practicing TM twice daily, in the morning and evening, has been shown to increase concentration, memory, learning ability, and creativity, as well as to reduce stress, anxiety, and incidents of illness. It is a very personal meditation, and so your results will be unique.

Beginning TM is as straightforward as sitting comfortably with your eyes closed. Do not try to relax or control your breathing. Wait thirty seconds and then begin thinking your mantra. You may want to experiment with different mantras, but keep in mind that the goal is not to focus on the mantra or even to think it clearly. The mantra needn't have a rhythm. If thoughts interrupt your mantra, don't push them away, but instead let them pass. After fifteen to twenty minutes, stop thinking the mantra and sit quietly for another two minutes before opening your eyes. During the meditation, you will find that your mind will settle down and you will enter a period of deeply relaxed alertness in which your consciousness transcends its normal boundaries. Your creativity will thrive while accumulated mental fatigue is washed away. Your body will also have settled into a state of deep restfulness.

Some believe that TM can help one attain a higher consciousness, while others see the meditation as a route to self-knowledge and physical and mental health. In TM, however, there are no right or wrong goals. The practice simply provides you with a way to access all facets of your existence - mental, physical, spiritual, individual, and universal - in a natural and nurturing way.

IS WHITE TEA BETTER THAN OTHER TEAS

"White tea" does not refer to black tea with milk, but rather to a specific form of tea in which the leaves and buds are simply steamed and dried. In this sense, white tea represents the least processed form of tea, since green, oolong and black teas undergo withering before various degrees of oxidation. White tea also contains a higher proportion of buds, which are covered with fine 'silvery' hairs that impart a light white/grey color to the tea. White tea brews to a pale yellow/light red color, and has a slightly sweet flavor with no 'grassy' undertones sometimes associated with green tea.

White tea is produced in a different way to all other teas. The leaves come from special varietal bushes and are not processed but are dried in the sun. Only special leaves are selected, the ideal is two leaves wrapped around a new shoot. After drying the leaves are again selected and sorted by hand.
