Starting April 23rd 2004 Antwerp will be the "World’s Book Capital" for a year. UNESCO has decided to grant the city the title of ‘World Book Capital’ on the basis of its unusually rich offerings as a book capital. The City of Antwerp is preparing an international programme – ABC2004 – with the support of the Flemish Community and the Province of Antwerp.

Antwerp Book Capital
Approximately a year ago the City of Antwerp launched the Antwerp Book Capital policy initiative. The City of Antwerp will be using all its literary advantages and pursuing a coordinated and continuous policy, which aims to generate an even bigger impact for Antwerp as a book capital. The city currently has an official municipal poet and a flat for a Writer in Residence, books have been left in the wild in Flanders and the Netherlands through bookcrossing and Antwerp Book Capital has helped organise several literary initiatives.

Antwerp World Book Capital 2004
Since 2001 UNESCO – together with an international selection committee – has named a World Book Capital each year (Madrid, 2001, Alexandria, 2002 and New Delhi, 2003). The city that is named World Book Capital promises to implement efforts to promote books and reading for a whole year. Based on the programme submitted by Antwerp Book Capital, a professional jury decided unanimously in January 2003 to confer the title of World Book Capital 2004 on Antwerp for its impressive mix of book fairs, literary events, libraries, archives and professional organisations among others. Antwerp was chosen over Barcelona, Santo Domingo and Seoul.

ABC2004
Because previous World Book Capitals chose to implement rather small-scale initiatives, the City of Antwerp would like to take full advantage of this occasion to be the first city to set up an extensive programme that will put Antwerp on the map as a Book Capital of the past, present and future. The City of Antwerp is preparing a programme – ABC2004 – with the support of the Flemish Community and the Province of Antwerp.

Antwerp Book Capital is in charge of drawing up the programme and will be organisationally embedded in Antwerpen Open vzw. This association has managed to build a strong reputation for itself since Van Dyck 1999 as an organiser of large-scale cultural events with an international dimension. ABC2004 is coordinated by a steering committee, within Antwerpen Open vzw, in which the Vlaams Fonds voor de Letteren (Flemish Literature Fund), Stichting Lezen (Foundation for the Promotion of Reading in Flanders) and Boek.be (the trade association that groups book publishers, sellers and importers) are represented among others. The general coordination of ABC2004 is in hands of Michaël Vandebril, the coordinator of Antwerp Book Capital.

The objectives for ABC2004 are clearly defined. ABC2004 wants to position Antwerp internationally as a historic, contemporary and future book capital, a city that loves words. ABC2004 will help attract national and international attention to books and reading in Antwerp and Flanders. The City of Antwerp wants to pursue a model policy for the active promotion of reading, writing and narrating, for instance also towards specific target groups such as young people and immigrants. But all these activities will also be organised with an eye on the future. ABC2004 must enable Antwerp as a book capital to develop itself sufficiently in order to pursue a continuous, internationally oriented. literary policy, focused on the Sint-Felixpakhuis warehouses.

Antwerpen wordt vanaf 23 april 2004 een jaar lang ‘Wereldboekenstad’. UNESCO verleent de stad de titel ‘World Book Capital’ wegens haar bijzonder rijk aanbod als boekenstad. De stad Antwerpen bereidt met steun van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap en de Provincie Antwerpen een internationaal programma voor onder de naam ABC2004.

Antwerpen Boekenstad
Een goed jaar geleden lanceerde de stad Antwerpen het beleidsinitiatief Antwerpen Boekenstad. Met Antwerpen Boekenstad speelt de stad Antwerpen al haar literaire troeven uit en voert een gecoördineerd, volgehouden literair beleid dat Antwerpen nog een grotere impact als boekenstad wil geven. Ondertussen heeft de stad een stadsdichter en een schrijversflat, werden er wilde boeken op Vlaanderen en Nederland losgelaten, en maakte Antwerpen Boekenstad tal van literaire initiatieven mee mogelijk.

Antwerp World Book Capital 2004
Sinds 2001 benoemt UNESCO samen met een internationale vakjury elk jaar een stad tot World Book Capital (Madrid, 2001, Alexandrië, 2002 en New Delhi, 2003). De stad die World Book Capital is, wordt verzocht een jaar lang inspanningen te leveren die het boek en het lezen promoten. Op basis van een dossier dat door Antwerpen Boekenstad werd ingediend, besloot een vakjury in januari 2003 unaniem om de stad Antwerpen tot World Book Capital 2004 te benoemen wegens haar rijk aanbod aan o.a. boekenbeurzen, literaire evenementen, bibliotheken, archieven en vakorganisaties. Antwerpen liet Barcelona, Santo Domingo en Seoel achter zich.

ABC2004
Omdat de vorige genomineerde steden eerder kleinschalige initiatieven ontplooiden, wil de stad Antwerpen ten volle de kans benutten om als eerste een uitgebreid programma op te zetten dat de stad internationaal op de kaart zet als historische, actuele en toekomstige boekenstad. De stad Antwerpen bereidt met steun van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap en de Provincie Antwerpen een programma voor onder de naam ABC2004.

Antwerpen Boekenstad is verantwoordelijk voor de samenstelling van het programma en krijgt voor ABC2004 een organisatorische inbedding in Antwerpen Open vzw, die op het vlak van grote culturele evenementen met internationale uitstraling sinds Van Dyck 1999 een sterke reputatie heeft opgebouwd. ABC2004 heeft in de schoot van Antwerpen Open vzw een stuurgroep waarin o.a. het Vlaams Fonds voor de Letteren, Stichting Lezen en Boek.be vertegenwoordigd zijn. De algemene coördinatie van ABC2004 ligt in handen van Michaël Vandebril, coördinator van Antwerpen Boekenstad.

De doelstellingen van ABC2004 zijn helder en duidelijk. ABC2004 positioneert Antwerpen internationaal als historische, actuele en toekomstige boekenstad, een stad die van het woord houdt. ABC2004 maakt het mogelijk de stedelijke, nationale en internationale aandacht te vestigen op het boek en het lezen in Antwerpen en Vlaanderen. De stad Antwerpen wil met ABC2004 ook een voorbeeldbeleid voeren waarin aan actieve lees-, schrijf- en vertelbevordering wordt gedaan, ook naar specifieke doelgroepen als jongeren en allochtonen. En dit alles zonder de toekomst uit het oog te verliezen: ABC2004 moet Antwerpen als boekenstad de kans bieden voldoende expertise op te bouwen om vanaf 2005 een continu internationaal georiënteerd literair beleid vol te houden, met als knooppunt het Sint-Felixpakhuis.
